Interview with 2011 Tour de France winner Cadel Evans

Interview with 2011 Tour de France winner Cadel Evans

What was the secret to winning the Tour de France?

“Actually there isn’t any secret – everything just fell into place. We were very unified as a team, everyone was a team player and we all helped each other through difficult phases of the race. We spent a long time preparing specifically for this race in every detail. The BMC bikes were the perfect match for the course, so the equipment was spot on. And last but not least, we were all capable of working towards one single objective over the three weeks – without any compromises.”

Cadel, the year started with wind tunnel tests in the spring. What specifically did you gain from these tests in the wind tunnel? What exactly were you testing in the wind tunnel?

“The tests in the wind tunnel were about further improving on my time trial position. I had a great bike for the time trials in the TM01. So the objective was to fine-tune the position as well, to get the absolute maximum out of it. The wind tunnel allowed us to test the aerodynamics with my arms and seated position in various different configurations. How you sit on a time trials bike is hugely important. Sitting ever so slightly lower might produce a much higher output in watts – provided you can ride fairly “comfortably” in that position. We also found out, for example, that the time trial helmet with Oakley sunglasses is more aerodynamic than the time trial helmet with visor. These are the details that make all the difference. So it was precisely these details that we worked on.”

Cadel, how come you are so good at time trials? How much difference does your position on the bike make?

“I don’t think I’m particularly good at time trials per se. I just try to optimize all the variables in time trials: my training, the equipment, the route inspection and my mental attitude. If everything falls into place, a top performance is possible. The position is crucial: a good balance between performance and comfort is important for me. I have to produce my maximum performance for about an hour. Finding the right position for this optimum performance is the key to success. The tests in the wind tunnel brought me a great deal in that respect. And the timemachine can be adapted very flexibly to my requirements.”

What about your co-operation with BMC’s R&D? How closely do you collaborate?

“In Stefano Cattai, we riders have an expert contact man at BMC who used to be a professional rider. Stefano is the perfect link person between the riders and the equipment – he speaks our language and is able to channel our feedback clearly and directly into BMC’s development work on the equipment. Conversely, Stefano has a very close understanding of our requirements, he’s a good judge of the team’s individual riders and so he can perfectly match the equipment – that’s both the frames and the components – to our needs. I personally think this is a perfect partnership; I really do have the feeling that BMC listens to our input and translates it into new innovations. I thought I already had the perfect time trials bike in the timemachine TT01. But BMC has once again exceeded our expectations with the new timemachine TM01.”
