The Riverside Drive bike lanes that were supposed to be installed this summer are in danger of being “indefinitely postponed.”

So we’re going to do what we can do while we still can, and bike to Lunken Airport and have quick a picnic, because soon that might be taken away from us.

We meet at Fountain Square at 6; we leave at 6:15. We’ll stop half-way there at the intersection of Collins Ave and Riverside to take a picture with the East End welcome sign. Then we’ll continue on to Lunken Airport and eat picnic food. You should bring picnic food. Then we come back in time for a Saturday night downtown.

This will be a SLOW paced ride, approximately 6 miles each way (12 miles round trip). If you have ever done the thursday ride this will be a piece of cake.

Route: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5370219.

It will be beneficial for the Riverside Drive Project if we set a positive tone for the ride.

Quality of Life

Livable Communities

Access for All

Complete Streets

We don’t want to come across as a group of angry bike riders but as concerned citizens who are pushing for progress.

The streets of our cities and towns are an important part of the livability of our communities. They ought to be for everyone, whether young or old, motorist or bicyclist, walker or wheelchair user, bus rider or shopkeeper. But too many of our streets are designed only for speeding cars, or worse, creeping traffic jams.

Now, in communities across the country, a movement is growing to complete the streets. States, cities and towns are asking their planners and engineers to build road networks that are safer, more livable, and welcoming to everyone.

“I bike on Riverside Drive. I want to continue to bike on Riverside Drive. This road provides safe access to beautiful scenery, parks and businesses. The road itself is an historical trait of Cincinnati’s personality. A dedicated bike lane will actually give people another reason and ability to identify with and become a part of it. Just as important, the road is actually flat. It is very accessible to bicyclists of all levels, and that is a rare trait for a road this long in Cincinnati.

The number of cyclists, use of bicycles as transportation, and the city’s reputation as a city that bikes is growing very fast. Cincinnatians are choosing health and clean air over sitting in their cars and adding to our smog alerts. This behavior should be encouraged, not taken away. I understand that 471 will be undergoing construction. I know that the highway will not be shut down, only face reduced lanes. If this is too troublesome for motorists, Columbia parkway is already an option. If they still wish to use Riverside Drive, that is fine, at 35 MPH. Riverside Drive is a residential street and no place for a highway. The speed limit should be enforced, not erased.

I hope that you understand that this bike lane will protect the property values of the residents on Riverside Drive, allow children to play in their front yard, and add to the quality of life for the residents of Riverside drive and the rest of the city. This is a simple matter of livability and conscience. Please, please do not let this road be misused.”

We may lose the proposed Riverside Drive bike lanes. We need your help to keep this project a priority.

BACKGROUND:
The City of Cincinnati has been preparing to make changes in the lane configuration on Riverside Drive between Bains and Congress to add new bike lanes. (See http://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/pages/-42817-/.) Queen City Bike has advocated for these changes, and worked with the East End community and the City of Cincinnati to create a plan that will benefit everyone.

CURRENT SITUATION:
I-471 will soon be under major construction. The City of Cincinnati is concerned that the construction will push traffic from I-471 onto Riverside Drive, and that the road may not be able to handle the extra traffic if a car lane is reconfigured into multiple bike lanes.

QUEEN CITY BIKE’S POSITION:
Queen City Bike believes that commuters from the eastern suburbs would use the limited-access Columbia Parkway to avoid congestion. Columbia Parkway is a non-residential road which gets you to downtown from the eastern suburbs faster than the residential Riverside Drive. Bicycle commuters from the eastern suburbs have no alternative to Riverside Drive.

If this project is delayed, current budgetary realities lead Queen City Bike to believe that the lane reconfiguration would be lost for the foreseeable future. Any future reconsideration will almost certainly require rerunning the considerable analysis that went into the decision, effectively wasting the work done and taxpayer’s money spent so far. Therefore, Queen City Bike opposes any delay in the Riverside Drive lane reconfiguration.

CityBeat Article

WKRC12 Video

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:
We encourage you to write, call or email the Director of the DOTE, the Mayor, and Cincinnati City Council using the information at the end of this Action Alert.

Your message should make the following points:

The residents of the East End want the Riverside Drive lane reconfiguration.

◦ It will make their neighborhood safer.

◦ It will improve their quality of life.

◦ It will have a positive effect on their property values.

Delaying the Riverside Drive lane reconfiguration takes Cincinnati’s Integrated Transportation plan a step back.
The Riverside Drive corridor was called out in the Bicycle Transportation Plan as a priority corridor, and the Cincinnati Department of Transportation and Engineering (DOTE) has been working on this project for almost 18 months
Riverside Drive is a major bicycle commuting route into the city from the eastern suburbs. It had no practical alternative, while cars have a practical alternative on Columbia Parkway.
If the Riverside project is forced to wait several budget cycles it is almost certain the DOTE will be force to rerun the entire traffic study and public participation process again. This will

◦ delay the project further.

◦ cost taxpayers more money.

This project is budgeted. If the project is killed, the budget goes to other projects. Budget realities mean it will be very difficult to allocate the resources again, including rerunning the analysis.
The Riverside Drive lane reconfiguration should be completed now.

The following three paragraphs will bore all but the most hardcore techie.

Here’s what it says in a nutshell: The bike rides smooth, the back does not bob up and down when you pedal, and it works better than anything ever.

Efficient Pedaling: At the beginning of the travel the eccentric link is rotating in a rearward direction guiding the lower pivot of the swing arm rearward. This counter-clockwise motion coupled with the initial rearward wheel path creates an excellent pedaling platform, making the SB-66 pedal and climb crisply without sacrificing small bump sensitivity.

Responsive Mid-stroke: The flat linear shape of the leverage ratio coupled with Switch Technology allows the bike suspension to be more responsive, especially in the mid-stroke of the travel. This essentially creates a larger “sweet spot”, keeping the rider higher in the travel throughout that portion and allowing the suspension to react better to bigger hits. There are no unexpected spikes or wallows so cornering and jumping feel comfortable and consistent throughout the travel.

Continuous Travel: Once the SB-66 reaches the inflection point about 4 inches into the travel, the eccentric link starts to rotate in the forward, clockwise direction. This means the rate at which the chain stay grows [dCSL] drops off quickly allowing the suspension to work independently of chain forces and pedal feedback. Because the suspension isn’t being impeded by chain growth in the last third of the travel, the smooth feel in the middle of the stroke continues all the way to the full compression without a hard bottom-out feeling.
